Jesus Teaches about Marriage, Divorce and Celibacy

The Pharisees also came to him, tempting him, and asking him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for any cause? And he answered and said to them, Have you not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and be joined to his wife: and they two shall become one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder. They said to him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He said to them, Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts allowed you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, Whoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoever marries her which is put away does commit adultery. His disciples said to him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

. But he said to them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. ( Celibacy ) For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it....Matt 19:3-12

And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she commits adultery.... Mark 10:12

 Jesus Blesses the Little Children

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was displeased, and said to them, Permit the little children to come to me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Truly I say to you, Whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. Mark 10:13-16

Jesus instructs a Rich Young Ruler on how to obtain Eternal Life

And when he was setting forth on the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother. And he answered and said to him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack: go your way, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. and he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.... Mark 10:17-22

Jesus comments on the Rich Young Ruler

And Jesus looked round about, and said to his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answered again, and said to them, Children, how hard is it for those that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Mark 10:23-25

You shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

When his disciples heard it (about the rich man), they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said to them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Then answered Peter and said to him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed you; what then shall we have ? And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, That you which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that has forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive a hundred fold, and shall inherit Everlasting life.... Matthew 19:25-29

The Parable of the Evil and Greedy Laborers

But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, which went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard. After agreeing for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, And said to them; Go you also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said to them, Why stand you here all the day idle? They said to him, Because no man has hired us. He said to them, Go you also into the vineyard; and whatever is right, that shall you receive. So when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the laborers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a denarius.

But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a denarius. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and you have made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do you no wrong: did you not agree with me for a denarius ? Take what is yours, and go your way: I will give to this last, even as unto you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.....Matthew 19:30 to 20:16

Jesus Again Teaches the Twelve About His Death

Then he took unto him the twelve, and said to them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the Prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spit upon: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither did they grasp the things which were spoken.....Luke 18:31-34

Jesus Rebukes the Selfish Ambition of the Twelve

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said to her, What what do you want ? She said to him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on your right hand, and the other on the left, in your kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, You know not what you ask. Are you able to drink of the cup that I shall

drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They said to him, We are able. And he said to them, You shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

And whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

But Jesus called them to him, and said, You know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whoever will be great among you, let him be your servant . Even as the Son of man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.... Matthew 20:20-28

 Passing through Jericho

Jericho lies 825 feet below sea level, making it the lowest city on earth. Known as the 'City of Palms', Jericho's moderate climate made it a favorite winter resort of King Herod who built his third palace shown above 15 miles east of Jerusalem. It is an important agricultural area, producing fresh fruits, and vegetables year round.

 Blind Bartimaeus receives his sight

And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calls for you. And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. And Jesus answered and said to him, What do you want that I should do to you? The blind man said to him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. Mark 10:46-52

Zacchaeus the Chief Tax Collector is Saved

And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the Chief among the Tax Collectors, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said to him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must stay at your house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zacchaeus stood, and said to the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore to him fourfold. And Jesus said to him, This day is salvation come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19: 1-10

A parable about a King going to get a Kingdom

And as they heard these things, he spoke a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said to them, Occupy till I come. But his citizens hated him, and sent an embassy after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

And it came to pass, that when he returned, having received the Kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called to him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. Then came the first, saying, Lord, your pound has gained ten pounds. And he said to him, Well done, good servant: because you have been faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities. And the second came, saying, Lord, your pound has gained five pounds. And he said likewise to him, You are to be over five cities. And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is your pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: For I feared you, because you are an austere man: you take up that you laid not down, and reap that you did not sow. And he said to him, Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: Why then did you not put my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest? And he said to them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that has ten pounds. And they said to him, Lord, he has ten pounds.) For I say to you, That unto every one which has shall be given; and from him that has not, even that he has shall be taken away from him. But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me. And when he had thus spoken, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.... Luke 19:11-28

And the Jews' Passover was near at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. Then sought they for Jesus, and spoke among themselves, as they stood in the Temple, What do you think, that he will not come to the Feast? Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders, that, if any man knew where he were, he should show it, that they might arrest him . . John 11:55-57..
