United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven states formed in 1971 by the then Trucial States after independence from Britain. Although each state - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain - maintains a large degree of independence, the UAE is governed by a Supreme Council of Rulers made up of the seven emirs, who appoint the prime minister and the cabinet.

The landscape of the Emirates is very dry, with little rain, vegetation and animal life. Mountains only take up some few percent of the total territory. Connected to the federation are several islands outside the coast along the Persian Gulf. Dubai aspires to be a regional and international centre for television and media services, alongside Egypt and Lebanon. An Electronic Commerce and Media Zone Authority was created in 2000 to attract regional and international media outlets.

Inhabitants: 3.13 million, Includes 2.05 million non-nationals (65% of total population). Border: 867 km (Saudi Arabia 457 km, Oman 410 km). Coastline: 1,318 km. Highest point: Jabal Yibir 1,527 m., Arable land: 0.5%, Capital: Abu Dhabi

Ethnic groups: Emirati Arabs, other Arabs, Iranians, South Asians, East Asians, Europeans, Americans., Languages: Arabic (official), Persian, English, Hindi, Urdu. - Religions: Sunni Islam, Shi'i Islam, Christianity, Hinduism.

Daytime temperatures are ideal during November, December, January and February. June/September are to be avoided. However hotels and other facilities offer good deals during the summer months. Hotels, shops, in fact all buildings, cars, buses etc are air-conditioned. The UAE is one of the safest places in the world to visit. In fact, it has been designated the world's safest holiday destination by the international travel industry on two occasions.

Arabic is spoken by almost 200 million people in more than twenty two countries, from Morrocco Iraq, and as far south as Somalia and the Sudan. The Arabic language originated in Saudi Arabia and spread rapidly across the Middle East. The languages of northern India, Turkey, Iran, Portugal, and Spain are full of words of Arabic origin.
