WEB MEDIA SCHOOL session 40 -E-mail Tips
Rules, as they're called in Outlook Express, and Filters, as they're referred to in Netscape Messenger, allow you to "direct" incoming e-mail to exactly where you want it. By now, you've probably figured out how to create special mail folders for storing your e-mail. Well, Rules and Filters can let you direct new messages to those folders also. You can have folders for family, school or work and have all incoming messages that meet the criteria you define go straight to the folder where you want it. You can even create rules that will send unsolicited commercial e-mail - spam - straight to the Trash folder. Now that's efficient!
Of course, if you want to get rid of all the spam, you'll need to be creative in defining your rules. You may want to exclude certain keywords or text strings, such as "Financial Freedom While You Sleep," or specific senders from whom you've received spam in the past. But be careful, because whatever keyword or phrase you choose will be excluded in each and every context. Which means that if you exclude the keywords "Virus Warning", any e-mail with the word "Virus" or "Warning" will end up in your spam file. Multiple rules are most effective, and both Outlook Express and Netscape let you set up as many rules as you want.
To set up Rules in Outlook Express, go to Tools, then Message Rules, then Mail. If you're using Netscape, just go to Edit, then Message Filters and you're ready to go!

Add a designer touch to your messages with Stationery - Add color, background images and special fonts to jazz up your outgoing messages. To use Stationery on a single message, select Format, then Add Stationery while you're in the body of a new e-mail message. To apply Stationery to all your outgoing messages, just go to Tools, then Options and click on the Compose tab and follow the directions in the Stationery area of the window.
Stay organized! - Do you receive ongoing e-mail conversations about the same topic? Follow the thread easily by grouping the conversation together. From the Inbox, go to View, then Current View, and select Group Message by Conversation. Now messages that are tied together by replies and forwards will be viewed together in your Inbox.
