session 43 -COMPUTER TERMS
- backbone - The main international telecommunications networks that carry Internet traffic
bandwidth - The upper limit on the amount of data, typically expressed as Kilobits per second (Kbps), that can pass through a network connection.- banner ad - An ad that appears alongside a requested clip or presentation. A banner ad can also rotate, making new ad images appear at regular intervals.
- bit - The smallest unit of measure of data in a computer. A bit has a binary value, either
0or1.- Baud , bps or bit rate - A measure of bandwidth, expressed as the number of bits transmitted per second. A 28.8 Kbps modem, for example, can transmit or receive around 29,000 bits per second. All of our media plays on all computers worldwide!
- buffering - Receiving and storing data before playing it back. The initial buffering time is called preroll. After preroll, excessive buffering may stall the presentation. Not on ours!
- Browser - refers to software used to navigate the world wide web
byte - A common measurement of data. One byte comprises eight (8) bits.- Client - refers to a computer attached to any network, including the Internet
codec - Coder/decoder. Codecs convert data between uncompressed and compressed formats, reducing the bandwidth a clip consumes.- Domain name - A n Internet address, for example www.wcie.net
E-mail - Is short for electronic mail sent to one or more persons over the internet. The defining characteristic is the @ for exsample holyword@gte.net
encoding - Converting a file into a compressed, streaming format. For example, you can encode WAV files as Real Audio.
FTP - A system for moving or copying files from a remote computer or server to another computer.
FAQ- Frequently asked questions along with their answers posted on the web.- HTTP - The protocol used by Web servers to communicate with Web browsers. Real Server can use HTTP, but it streams clips to Real Player with RTSP. See also CHTTP.
HTML - Hypertext Markup Language is a special programming language used to make information compatable with the internet.
Hypertext - Highlighted words on web pages that enable you to jump from one page to another.
IP Address -A unique internet protocol address assigned to a specific computer connected to the internet.
ISDN - A regular telephone line that has been modified to transmit voice or data using digital signals instead of analog(About 10 times faster then regular phone service.- ISP - Internet Service Provider. A company that provides access to the Internet. Many ISPs have Real Server available to stream media clips. We have the BEST! used by Disney, ABC etc.
JAVA - A software language allowing people to build interactive web sites.- Kilobit - A common unit of data measurement equal to 1024 bits. A Kilobit is usually referred to in the context of bit rate per unit of time, such as Kilobits per second (Kbps).
- Kilobyte - A common unit of data measurement equal to 1024 bytes. Also equal to 8 Kilobits.
Link - A hypertext code that allows people to move from one document to another by cliking the mouse on the link.
Modem - A devise that allows a computer to conect and communicate over telephone lines.- preroll - Buffering that occurs at the start of a presentation. Preroll should be 15 seconds or less.
- RealAudio - A Real System clip type for streaming audio over a network. Real Audio clips use the
.rmor.raextension.- RealText - A Real System clip type (file extension
.rt) for streaming text over a network. It uses a mark-up language for formatting text.- real-time - Delivered as it occurs. For example, a live broadcast is streamed across a network in real-time.
- RealVideo - A Real System clip type for streaming video over a network. Real Video clips use the
.rmextension. We have the best on the web !- rotating banner ads - Banner advertisements that change at a specified interval, such as a new ad banner every 30 seconds.
- RTSP - The open, standards-based control protocol RealServer uses to stream clips to RealPlayer or any RTP-based client. Contrast to HTTP.
- server - A software application, such as a Web server or RealServer, that sends clips over a network. or a computer that runs server software.
- SMIL - Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. A mark-up language for specifying how and when each clip plays. SMIL files use the extension
.smilor .smi. We are pioneers in the use of this technology- stream - To send a media clip over a network so that it begins playing back as quickly as possible.
- URL - Uniform Resource Locator. A location description that lets a Web browser or RealPlayer receive a clip stored on a Web server or RealServer.
