WEB MEDIA SCHOOL session 47-MOVIES

Embedding a Movie in a Page

To embed a movie, you have to flatten if first. "Flattening" is a special way of saving a movie so that it can be played on non-Apple computers. The easiest way to do this is to use MoviePlayer, a free program from Apple. Just open the movie and choose "Save As..." from the File menu, then select "Make movie self-contained" and "Playable on non-Apple computers",First place the movie in the "movies" folder. That way the link will be properly formed. Next, use the Insert menu in Claris Home Page and pick the "QuickTime Movie..." command. This will bring up a dialog box that lets you open a movie file. After you open the movie, you can double-click on it to make some choices about how the movie will be displayed, such as whether it should loop (replay continuously), play automatically once downloaded by the browser, have the movie controller strip at the bottom, etc. After you insert the movie and check the settings, you can preview it in Netscape Navigator. Please note that Claris Home Page cannot actually play the movie...you must preview it in Navigator or some other Web Browser. Aside from the obvious playback of movies, a QuickTime movie can also be used to present music! QuickTime movies are actually a way to present any "time-based" media, that is, information that takes time to be presented. One way of using QuickTime to play music is to use MoviePlayer to open a MIDI file (a type of music file that can be used on many types of computers...you can find a whole bunch at the following URL: http://www.concentric.net/~Jmeddaug/midi/). Just as with a "regular" movie, these have to be flattened to be played on non-Apple computers.
