NET MEETING
Most users of the internet are on dial up lines - not connected all the time. Each time they connect their IP addresses change (the IP address is at the heart of the internet -- all location information ultimately gets translated to Iaddress and computers intercommunicate using that as an address). In order for potential calling computers to connect to you, they must have two pieces of information: they must know that you are online or connected they must know your current IP address

The ILS servers supply the function of providing this information. When you"Log on" to an ILS server you are telling the ILS server that you (identified by your supplied email address) are connected to the internet, that you are at acertain IP address and that you are running NetMeeting and able to field calls. Now potential callers need know only two fixed pieces of information to call you: the ILS server that you are logged into or would log into if you areonline the supplied email address

The ILS server you choose to use need bear no relationship geographically to where you are -- all that is necessary is that your potential callers know which you will log in to.The ILS server knows whether or not you are online and if you are what yourcurrent IP address is. You can "log in" to an ILS server without appearing in the viewable directory so that only associates that know the ILS server and email address you supplied can find you.

Besides allowing other users to contact you the ILS has a completely separate but parallel function - it lets you know when other users are on line and lets you contact them. These users need not be on the same ILS as you (if in fact you are "logged in" to any ILS). You can determine if they are on-line, some characteristics about their system (do they have sound and or a video sending capability), and the information they supplied about their location etc. You can initiate a call to them.....Once a call has been initiated to a user the ILS is no longer involved -- all communication is between the participating computers.

V3.0 has introduced a different method of accessing directories ( the old method remains but is not the default and only comes into play when old style ILS servers are added to the list). One directory can now be accessed via an http interface allowing searching by category but not a complete list.

Microsoft NetMeeting 3.01 Quick Start Tutorial -, This tutorial was created by CTDepot.com
1) Download and install Microsoft NetMeeting 3.01.

2) Run NetMeeting by clicking on Start, then Programs, and then the NetMeeting icon. The first time you run

NetMeeting, you will need to step through the prompts that appear. When prompted for your personal

information, at a minimum you must enter your first and last name and email address, although you

may just enter an initial in the last name field if you prefer. Under comments, you may want to enter

something such as "Clean chat only". Next, you will come to a screen that asks if you want to log onto a directory server when NetMeeting starts. Leave that check box checked. The default value in the Server

Name box is Microsoft Internet Directory.CTDepot.com has set up its own NetMeeting directory server called ils.ctdepot.com which is up and running all the time.Enter ils.ctdepot.com in the Server Name box. You can always change it again later if you want to. There is also a checkbox labeled "Do not list my name in the directory." If you check this box, then your name will not be listed on the NetMeeting Directory Server, but you will still be able to see other people's listings.

Continue through the remaining prompts. When you come to the Audio Tuning Wizard screen, make sure you run the Audio Tuning Wizard to test your microphone and speakers or headset. If you're using speakers and a microphone, you might want to consider getting a headset for extra privacy and to eliminate echo problems.

Once you've finished configuring NetMeeting, it should automatically launch. If you don't see NetMeeting on your screen, click the Start Button, select Programs, and you should see the NetMeeting icon. At any point if you want to run the Audio Tuning Wizard again, from NetMeeting just click on Tools, and select Audio Tuning Wizard.

 3) Finding someone to talk to......The first way is to use a NetMeeting Directory Server, called an Internet Locator Server (ILS), such as ils.ctdepot.com. A NetMeeting Directory Server lists the names of people currently connected to it with NetMeeting. You can then double click on a name to call that person. The Directory Server you are connected to will display your directory listing for others to see (your directory listing contains the personal information you entered when you first set up NetMeeting).

To see a listing of people on a Directory Server, from the NetMeeting application, click the "Find Someone in a Directory" button, which looks like this . You will see a window open up that contains a listing of people connected to the Directory Server. The name of the Directory Server that you are viewing a listing of is displayed in the "Select a directory" field at the top of the window. There are other NetMeeting Directory Servers that you can connect to and view directory listings of. If you would like to try out other NetMeeting directory servers besides ils.ctdepot.com, there is a web site called The NetMeeting Place that keeps a large list of available Directory Servers. Just type a Directory Server name in the "Select a directory" field, hit Enter, and you will be viewing a directory listing from that Directory Server.

Once you get a directory listing of users, you can sort the list by clicking on any of the headings in thewindow. For instance to sort the list by location, just click on the Location heading, or to find only those people that have "Clean Chat Only" in the Comments field, click on the Comments heading and all those people will be grouped together.

It is important to point out that the Directory Server you are connected to and the Directory Server whose listing is being displayed can be two different servers. To see which server you're connected to, from the NetMeeting application click on Tools, then Options, and then look at the field labeled "Directory". That field contains the name of the NetMeeting Directory Server that you are connected to and which is displaying your listing. You can connect to a different Directory Server just by typing another server name in that field. If you don't want to have your email address and personal information show up in the directory listing, then check the box labeled "Do not list my name in the directory", but remember that if you're not listed in the directory, other people won't be able to find you.

Another very popular method of finding your friends and contacts on the Internet is with the Microsoft MSN Messenger program. This handy little program works very well with NetMeeting and allows you to bypass the ILS servers. MSN Messenger lets you search for your friends and contacts on the Internet, and it will automatically tell you when they're online. You can use MSN Messenger to send instant text messages to your friends, and if you want to call them with NetMeeting, MSN Messenger will automatically start up NetMeeting on both PCs and initiate the NetMeeting call. If you select "Microsoft Internet Directory" in the Netmeeting "Select a directory" field in the Find Someone window, you will see instructions on how to install MSN Messenger, or if it's already installed you will see a list of your contacts that are online and offline. You may also have noticed two other options in the "Select a directory" field. Selecting History will bring up names of people you have called inhe past, and selecting " Windows Address Book" will bring up entries stored in your Windows Address Book. You can also call someone directly without going through a Directory Server if you know their IP address. Just type their IP address in the NetMeeting Address Bar, which is the bar under the menu items.

 4) Starting a conversation.

Before you call someone, you might want to see if they're already in a conversation with someone else. First, in NetMeeting, click the "Find Someone in a Directory button", then in the "Select a directory" field, select a NetMeeting directory server such as ils.ctdepot.com and you will see a listing of peopleconnected to that server. To the left of a person's email address you will see a small icon of a computer. If that icon has a little red star in the corner, then that person is already having a conversation with someone else. You will also see a couple other icons which tell you whether that person's computer is equipped for audio and video. If there is an audio icon, it just means their computer has a sound card, and the video icon means they have a camera hooked up to their computer. That doesn't always mean those devices are working properly, just that NetMeeting detected them. Even if you don't have a camera on your computer, you can still call others who do. If you're interested in sending video with NetMeeting, then you will need to get a PC camera for your computer, or if you own a Camcorder, you can use that as a PC camera by getting a video capture card for your PC. There are many PC cameras and video capture cards to choose from

Starting a conversation with someone is easy. Just double click the person's name, and wait for them to answer. When they answer, just speak into your microphone at a normal level, and you should be able to hear them through your speakers or headset. If you have difficulty hearing each other, adjust the volume using the audio sliders. To see these sliders, click on the Adjust Audio Volume button, which is on the main NetMeeting screen . Another way to call someone is to right click on their name and select Call. If someone calls you, you will see an Incoming Call window pop up, at which point you can click either Accept or Ignore. To end a call, simply click the End Call button, which looks like this .

 5) Video. NetMeeting allows you to both send and receive video. This requires that both parties have cameras hooked up to their computers, but you can still receive video even if you don't have a camera attached to your computer.

If you have a camera attached to your computer and you want to send video during a call, simply clickthe Start/Stop Video button . You may notice that once you start sending video, your audio quality is reduced. This is because the video and audio are competing for the same bandwidth. If the audio gets too choppy, stop sending video by clicking the Start/Stop Video button again. Alternatively, you can select Tools, then Video, then Send or Receive to start and stop the video. If you want to see the video that you are sending, then either click the Picture-in-Picture , or click View, and then select My Video. To adjust the size of the video you are receiving, click on Tools, then Video, then Window Size. To adjust the size of the video you are sending, click on Tools, then Options, then select the Video tab, and then select the image size. From the same window you can also adjust the quality and speed of the image being received.

 6) NetMeeting web interface..... CTDepot.com has set up a web interface for NetMeeting. This means you can run NetMeeting from a webpage. You will need to have NetMeeting 3.01 and Internet Explorer 4.01 or greater installed. To try outthe NetMeeting web interface, go to this address: http://www.ctdepot.com/nmweb.htm. To get to any of the NetMeeting menu options from the web page, you will need to click on the Undock button.

 7) Meetings and other features. If you only want to use NetMeeting to talk to other people, then this is as far as you need to go. This last section discusses advanced features of NetMeeting such as hosting meetings, chat, and the Whiteboard. With NetMeeting multiple people can connect to each other and participate in a meeting. While only two people can talk to each other and share video, everyone in a meeting can use the data collaboration tools. If you want to create a meeting, click on Call, and then select Host Meeting. You don't have to host a meeting in order to use the data collaboration tools, but hosting a meeting makes it easier for the meeting participants to stay connected to the meeting. Meeting participants can join the meeting by calling the meeting host or any of the participants. If a person joins a meeting by calling a meeting participant, then they will be disconnected from the meeting when the participant they are connected to leaves. By calling the meeting host, you will stay connected to the meeting no matter who else leaves.

Briefly, the data collaboration tools you can use are:

Chat - This feature allows online meeting participants to type messages back and forth to each other.

File Transfer - This allows you to send a file to all online meeting participants.

Whiteboard - All online meeting participants can write and draw on the Whiteboard at the same time.

Sharing Applications - Meeting participants can share applications that they have on their computers.

Other meeting participants can then view and even make updates to the shared application, even if they

don't have that application on their computer.
