WE INSTALL NETMEETING - THE BEST IN VIDEO - AUDIO CONFERENCING
PT 94 Domain Director

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM:

 DomainDirector v1.1 allows you to direct parked domains to a subdirectory or page of a "primary" domain. The ability to do this relies on your domain host's ability or willingness to allow multiple domains to share the same IP#. Usually, you will have to pay a setup fee to your domain host to park one domain to another.

SERVER REQUIREMENTS In order to run DomainDirector v1.1: 1) Your web server must have the ability to run cgi programs in your main www directory. 2) You must have the ability to change permissions on the cgi program. 3) You must have one or more domains to redirect. Though you can use DomainDirector v1.1 to redirect your primary domain to specific page or directory, this is not the purpose of this program. 4) PERL 4 or higher on your web server.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

To install and run DomainDirector v1.1: 1) Open index.cgi file in your favorite text editor. 2) Look for $mainpage and enter the home page of your primary (main) domain here. This is the page that will be served if your visitor types your primary domain's name in their browser. This page must be correctly defined here, or the program will perpetually loop. Example: $mainpage = "index.html"; 3) Next... %domains is the list of domains that are parked to your primary domain. If you want the domain redirected to a subdirectory of your primary domain, you need to tell DomainDirector what directory you want the parked domain redirected to. To add a new domain to this list, simply copy the format and insert the new domain name and directory using the format demonstrated below. Please pay careful attention to the format.

Example:

%domains = (

'www.scriptsuite.com' => 'programs/',

'www.scriptsolutions.com' => 'index.html',

);

IMPORTANT: Always put "www" in front of the domain name.

The first domain name in above the example is redirected to a subdirectory (IMPORTANT: make sure you put a forward slash after the directory name)

The second domain name in the above example is redirected to a page in the main www directory.

4) After you save the file, upload index.cgi in ASCII format to your web server's main www directory.

5) Change permissions on the file to 755 (NOTE: some web servers may require permissions of 775 or higher for the program to run. If in doubt, check with your server administrator.

6) Test the program in your browser. For example, if your primary domain is "main.com", your parked domain is "second.com", and your primary domain's home page is "index.html", type "http://first.com" in your web browser.

Assuming a correct setup, you will be forwarded to "http://www.first.com/index.html".

If that works, then your primary domain is set up fine and it's time to test your second domain. type "http://second.com" in your browser. Assuming a correct setup, you will be forwarded to "http://www.second.com/seconddir/".

If your second domain does not work, make sure that you have correctly defined the page or directory in %domains, and that they exist.

TROUBLESHOOTING

"Internal Server Error?!?!?"

1) Make sure you uploaded index.cgi in ASCII format. If you're not sure how to do that, consult your FTP program's instructions.

2) Make sure the file permissions are 755 (if you're not sure what permissions the file should be on your server, contact your server administrator)

3) Make sure you're allowed to run cgi programs outside of your cgi-bin.

4) Open index.cgi and make sure that you followed the correct format for $mainpage and %domains.

"It looks like I'm going somewhere, but I never get there!" 1) This may be caused by not setting or incorrectly setting the $mainpage. Make sure that $mainpage is your primary domain's home page. Not setting $mainpage ($mainpage = "";) will cause a perpetual loop.

"I'm setting up more parked domains, but it's only showing the main page!" 1) Make sure that you have a www in front of each domain name in %domains. Otherwise, it won't match, and your default page will be shown instead of redirecting you to the correct page or directory.

How does Website Redirection works .... If you have a Website with your current ISP such as: http://www.myisp.com/~mysite and you have a registered Domain Name you.com, you can redirect visitors who type in www.you.com to go to your current website http://www.myisp.com/~mysite Some redirection methods will display www.you.com in the browser address line. Redirection is immediate, so your visitors won't experience any additional loading time for your website. Website redirection does not "cancel" the old address of your website, either. You can still access your page with the old address (URL) or by entering your domain name.

How does Domain Pointing works .... You can use Domain Pointing if your website has a static IP address associated with it. When someone looks for you on the Web by entering http://www, followed by your domain name, Domain Pointing sends them to the IP address you have specified. This could be any website on the Internet. You cpoint your domain to any site with its own IP address.

Domain Pointing or Website Redirection? .... Domain Pointing is used to send visitors to a website with a fixed network address, called an IP address. If the address of your website is a subdirectory of another domain, you should choose Redirection to direct people to your site.

Subdirectories look something like this: http://www.myexample.com/users/~joe.

IP Addresses look something like this: 203.32.160.239

Hi this is Gene at www.wcie.net - I would like your opinion on the following html from a domain (re)direct ---- Would some search engines not use it because of the frames or does all the "no frames" entries avoid this ?

Answer ... They won't have a problem with it, but I'd kill the comments, meta generator tag and the noframes stuff, actually. Make the page as small as possible.

I am trying to use an index cgi on my server - mindspring, but no success so far. What if I put this on a server with a pointer? It seems that I need to avoid domain direct to avoid frames, thanks Gene

Answer ... I personally like to use a javascript redirect to the real page, and submit both the domain page and the real page to the search engines. Don't be too concerned about what people see in the location line. Best solution, of course, is real webhosting of a real domain.Robert Woodhead, CEO, AnimEigo http://www.animeigo.com/ ....... http://selfpromotion.com/ The Net's only URL registration SHARESERVICE.
( Domain direct also suggests submitting the actual address, Gene )

This is Gene at wcie.net. .... I tried to access my main page and a 403 error no permission to access came up

Answer ... It took me the longest time to figure out why it kept giving that 403 access denied error when it would run fine from the server itself...then I found that pesky, little .htaccess file sitting on the root directory. Renamed that file and now it works fine. I ended up using one of my own versions of index.cgi if that is ok.. That file that was causing the error is part of the Front Page extensions. If you are going to use the index.cgi program, you can't use Front Page at the same time because of this. It looks like the .htaccess file that Front Page installs blocks out that index.cgi redirect capability. If you decide that you'd rather keep Front Page running (if that's what you're using currently), you'll want to remove the index.cgi that is there and rename the old.htaccess file I have on the server back to .htaccess.
